Vitale Special Workshop: Cyanotype for Library Staff
A cyanotype workshop at the Button statue at Penn, giving participants the chance to create prints and tote bags using this historic photographic process.
On July 31st, we embarked on an exciting journey with our cyanotype workshop with Noelle and Christine, held from noon to 2 PM at the iconic Button statue. We aimed to provide participants with a unique opportunity to create prints and tote bags or pencil cases using the historic cyanotype process.
However, as with all outdoor events, we faced the unpredictable challenge of weather. Hoping for clear skies and sunshine, we unfortunately encountered less-than-ideal conditions, prompting us to postpone the workshop.
Another unexpected challenge we encountered was with the materials, specifically the tote bags. As the workshop day approached, we discovered that the cyanotype chemicals have a limited shelf life and need to be used within a few days of preparation. Christine and Noelle worked diligently to repaint the bags before the workshop. This was a learning experience for all of us and part of the research journey. We appreciated everyone's patience and enthusiasm as we navigated these hurdles.
Despite these setbacks, we are optimistic about the outcomes and grateful to everyone who participated in this test run. Staff’s involvement is invaluable as we are refining the workshop in preparation for our students this fall. Our fingers are crossed that we will have some amazing creations to share.
This cyanotype workshop is a pilot project for the Vitale Digital Media Lab, which we plan to officially launch in the early fall when students return. We are excited about the potential of this workshop to engage more students in creative and hands-on learning experiences. We look forward to seeing more students participate and immerse themselves in this unique activity during the upcoming semester.
Thank you for all the participants’ support and enthusiasm, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for this workshop!
