Black Atlantic: Descendants of Africans in Brazil
The collection documents the journey and lives of the Africans who were taken and sold as slaves in Portugal.
Collection Overview
The slave trade from Africa to Brazil lasted 350 years. Over 4 million Africans were taken as slaves. They were from Benin, Angola, Senegal, Sao Tome, and Mozambique, among other African countries on the west coast of Africa. Their destination was Sao Paulo, Bahia, Maranhão, Pernambuco, and Rio de Janeiro. They were not allowed to carry anything physical with them, but they carried their feelings, ideas, culture, traditions, eating habits, rhymes, music, religion, and creed in themselves.
This collection includes books, films, and articles on enslaved Africans and their descendants in Brazil. Find these materials in the library catalog.
