Coffee with a Codex: Folding Almanac in Middle English

An informal lunch or coffee time to meet virtually with Kislak curators and talk about one of the manuscripts from Penn's collections. Each week we'll feature a different manuscript and the expertise of one of our curators. Everyone is welcome to attend.

On May 14, curator Dot Porter and Schoenberg Curator of Manuscripts Nicholas Herman brought out an exciting new acquisition, Ms. Codex 2368. This is an English medical and astrological almanac with leaves folded into 6 compartments and historical notes up to 1415. This book is NOT in J. P. Gumbert, Bat books: a catalogue of folded manuscripts containing almanacs or other texts, Bibiologia 41 (Brepols, 2016), and it is one of only two known Middle English manuscripts of this type (the other one is in the British Library). It includes a Zodiac Man diagram and calendar and astronomical tables. Written in England after 1415. (FIND Record; Not yet digitized; CWAC Recording)
