For the past few years, the Internet Archive has been involved in litigation in a case that holds important implications for the future of Controlled Digital Lending. Controlled Digital Lending is a practice and legal theory whereby libraries lend digital copies of print books that they own, subject to some important lending restrictions, potentially enhancing the ways that libraries can serve their patrons. As such, this case holds significant implications for how libraries operate going into our increasingly digital future.
