Modelling the Middle Ages: VisColl as a Digital Tool for Manuscript Research

In this talk 2023-2024 SIMS Visiting Research Fellow, Suzette van Haaren will present a meta-analysis of VisColl, in particular its implementation software VCEditor, as a digital tool for studying medieval manuscripts and "visualising collations." Through interviewing manuscript professionals about their work with VCEditor, van Haaren attempted to find out more about daily research practices in digital environments, how this affects the way that they look at their research objects and the conclusions they draw from them. This offers a reflection on what our reliance on digital methods means for the study and our understanding of these ancient books. The research presented in this talk was conducted during van Haaren's time as SIMS fellow in April 2024.
