The US Navy and the Marine Corps were founded in Philadelphia in 1775 and will mark their 250th anniversary in the city of their birth in October 2025. To coincide with the anniversary (see the full schedule of events), this conference will bring together scholars from the whole sweep of US history to discuss the Navy and Marine Corps in their various contexts.

Navigating the Past is sponsored by the McNeil Center for Early American Studies and Rutgers University-Camden, in conjunction with the Kislak Center, where a selection of related materials will be on display in the Henry Charles Lea Library on Friday.

The University of Pennsylvania, located in the heart of the city, was at the center of the dramatic events of 1776 and the Revolution that followed. 250 years later, partners across the university are exploring how history can help us better understand the present and create a sustainable and inclusive future.
