Mural in the 5th Street SEPTA station in Philadelphia featuring freedom seeker, Ona Judge, and George Washington's house site.

On February 25 in Philadelphia, we celebrate Oney Judge Day. Ona Judge Staines, also known as Oney Judge, was born into slavery in George and Martha's plantation Mt Vernon in 1773, and escaped slavery from George Washington's Philadelphia household in 1796. Despite a massive effort on the part of George Washington, she was never recaptured. Her story reminds us to question whose stories should really be told as inspirational examples of the early American fight for liberty and freedom.
