Penn Libraries Book Prize in Sustainability 2024 Reception and Ceremony

This new award recognizes outstanding contributions to the global discourse on environmental sustainability. A cocktail reception will precede the formal award ceremony, where Johan Eklöf will speak about his book The Darkness Manifesto.

Join us for an opportunity to meet the inaugural awardee, Johan Eklöf, and learn more about his award-winning book The Darkness Manifesto.

The Penn Libraries Book Prize in Sustainability recognizes outstanding contributions to the global discourse on environmental sustainability. Penn Libraries Board of Advisors member Haniel J. Lynn, ENG'91, WG'95, PAR'23 and his wife Anita Hsueh Lynn, ENG’91, PAR’23 generously provided funding to establish the book prize.

About the Winner

Johan Eklöf, PhD, is a Swedish bat scientist and writer, most known for his work on microbat vision and more recently, light pollution. He lives in the west of Sweden, where he works as a conservationist and copywriter. Eklöf has studied bats for almost twenty years and now has his own consultancy company, hired by authorities, wind companies, municipalities, city planners, and environmental organizations as an expert on bats, night ecology, and nature friendly lighting. The Darkness Manifesto is his second book to be translated into English.
