Publishing Reimagined

The scholarly publishing system successfully disseminates hundreds of thousands of new works every year. But does the system function as well as it could? In this workshop, we will address the core goals and incentives surrounding publishing, and dare to envision alternatives.

Not all scholars have equitable access to publishing channels, nor do all relevant audiences have frictionless access to new knowledge. Structures like impact factor and open access article processing charges have become manipulatable, gameable tools for power, influence, and concentrated financial enrichment.

Publishing was not always this way – and it doesn’t have to continue on this path. Please join us for Publishing Reimagined, a hands-on, interactive exercise in creativity, imagination, and optimism. In this workshop, we will address the core goals and incentives surrounding publishing, and dare to envision alternatives. Groups will be asked to dissect a specific problem with the publishing system, then visualize an entirely new model. Participants will leave this workshop with a better understanding of the current scholarly publishing landscape and ideas on how they might change their own participation in the publishing system.

This event is part of the Penn Libraries International OA Week 2024 celebration.
