George L. Murray Fund for Rare Materials
Established in 2010, The George L. Murray Fund for Rare Materials supports the acquisition of antique books and pamphlets at the University of Pennsylvania Libraries.
George Murray was born in New York City, New York to an Irish family. He grew up in the Bronx, where he attended Catholic high school. Though his family was of modest means, he was befriended by an Uncle, who supported his enrollment in the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. He graduated from the University in 1954 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics. While at Penn, George was involved with the International Affairs Association, the Propeller Club, and the Society for the Advancement of Management.
After graduating, George become a teacher at PS 277, a public school in the Bronx. He married Sheila T. Hill in Dallas, Texas, in 1932, where the couple resided before moving to Miami Beach, Florida. Sheila passed away in 2001. George passed away in Florida in 2010, bequeathing a portion of his estate to the University of Pennsylvania Libraries.
