This fund for the Penn Biomedical Library was established in 1982 in memory of D. Sergeant Pepper, MD, Penn Medicine 1932.
After serving a fellowship at Yale University, he worked on the staffs of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Graduate Hospital and taught at Penn's Medical School.
During World War II, he served with Penn's 20th General Hospital on the Burma Road in Assam, India, as chief of medicine at McGuire Army Air Corps Hospital. He held the rank of colonel.
After the war, he became active in corporate medicine and held posts with Provident Mutual Life Insurance Company and Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Comapny, also serving as president of the Life Insurance Medical Directors Association of America.
A fourth generation Penn graduate, he served as a trustee of the university from 1962-1972.
As a descendant of Benjamin Franklin, he was a member of the Descendants of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence, and as a descendant of William Brewster, he was a member of the Mayflower Society.
