Introductory VR Experiences in the Mixed Reality Lab

Increasingly, virtual reality is being utilized within the world of medicine. From simulations of cancer radiation treatment to help anxious patients to trainings on the administration of Narcan, the uniquely immersive experience of VR allows users to practice life-saving interventions in a safe, controlled, digital environment.
While these initiatives are exciting, not everyone has had the chance yet to try on a VR headset. When users are inexperienced with VR, they will likely face steeper learning curves when using more advanced medical applications. To help remedy these inequity issues, team members from the Bollinger Digital Fabrication Lab are hosting a weekly Mixed Reality Lab VR Open House. Running from 2-4pm on Wednesdays, hosted in Holman Biotech Commons’ Design Thinking Studio, these events are open to all members of the Penn Community. Participants are given the opportunity to wear a Meta Quest 3 headset, learn VR controls, and test out some introductory medical education applications with Bollinger Staff available to assist.
Check out the Penn Libraries calendar for more details and confirmation of VR Open House dates.
