Ready, Set, Library: A National Library Week Blog Round-Up

Learn from the archivists, scholars, data nerds, and media mavens who bring the collections and services of the Penn Libraries to you.

workshop

Did you know that this week is National Library Week? From April 7-13, people across the U.S. are celebrating the ways libraries enrich our lives and strengthen our communities. Here at the Penn Libraries, that means celebrating the way we enrich life, study, and scholarship at Penn—and everything that the Penn community does to enrich our work in return.

None of our work would be possible without our staff, whose skills and interests stretch far beyond knowing how to get you that book you need for class. Want to learn more about what we do? Here’s a round-up of blog posts from the archivists, scholars, data nerds, and media mavens who bring the collections and services of the Penn Libraries to you.

Podcasts as research—and research in podcasts

The Research Data and Digital Scholarship team held several workshops this year focused on podcasting as digital scholarship. Even if you missed one of these live sessions, you can learn about the topic in this post from Contemporary Publishing Fellow Cosette Bruhns Alonso.

Want a deeper look at how podcasts can fuel research? Project Archivist Hope Jones recently wrote about how the podcast Sugar Land inspired her to seek out stories of enslaved people in the Penn Libraries collections.

From data curation to copyright

Many of our library staff members are incredibly knowledgeable about specific aspects of the research and academic publication process. For example, Research Data Engineer Lauren Phegley can help you curate your data, while Copyright Advisor Stephen Wolfson helps us all understand how copyright affects our work as scholars and librarians. Here he is talking about the recent case against the Internet Archive.

Just for fun

Being part of the Penn Libraries community can lead you to learn and explore all sorts of new skills and hobbies. Just recently, Processing Archivist Kelin Baldridge tried out a recipe she found in one of our historical cookbooks, Digital Media Lab Assistant Noelle Ramirez-Faisca took a vintage camera from the Vitale Digital Media Lab on a hike, and Instructional Technology Specialist Leqi Liu commemorated a furry friend by making a mechanical flipbook.
