Acting Associate Vice Provost for Technology and Digital Initiatives
Joe is responsible for the Libraries’ central technology services and organizational analysis activities. His division includes digital library development and strategy; systems infrastructure; public-facing computing and software support; management of the Libraries’ Web Unit; direction of Expertise@Penn, a new service that assists faculty with research compliance. He also manages the Penn Libraries evolving data warehousing and business intelligence infrastructure and related analytical processes. Joe has participated in collective bargaining for the Libraries, and managed the Libraries role in the introduction of the Canvas learning management system at Penn in 2014. He represents Penn in library IT planning of the IvyPlus group; is a past member of the Library Assessment Conference Program Committee for the Association of Research Libraries; and served on the Project COUNTER Executive Committee. Joe was part of the Open Library Environment Design Project, funded by Mellon. In 2008, he was one of a three-person team that carried out an external review of the University of Botswana Library. In 2013, Joe was selected for the University’s Leadership at Penn program.
