Joanna Thompson
Joanna is the Libraries' first point of contact for the faculty, staff, and students of the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania.
Prior to joining the Penn Libraries, Joanna was employed by the City University of New York as a librarian in two simultaneous positions: as Open Educational Practices Librarian at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, and as Open Educational Resources Librarian at the New York City College of Technology. In these positions, Joanna worked with CUNY faculty to identify and to develop OER materials for their courses. Joanna was also an Educational Technologist at Baruch College's Center for Teaching and Learning, where she worked with faculty and students to create Wordpress-based course sites, instructional videos, and game modules for The CUNY Game. At the same time, Joanna volunteered as a reference librarian for the Brooklyn and Queens Public Libraries' Jail & Prison Services. Joanna entered library service as an Archival Graduate Summer Intern for the New York City Department of Sanitation's Artist-in-Residence and later, Records Management Aide at DSNY Archives, preparing special collections accessions and creating social media posts about the history of New York's Strongest.
Joanna holds a B.A. in Cultural Anthropology and Studio Art from the University of Louisville, an M.A. in Visual and Media Anthropology from the Freie Universitaet Berlin, and an M.S. in Library and Information Science from Pratt Institute. She is also a student in the Interactive Technology and Pedagogy certificate program at the City University of New York's Graduate Center. She received a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to teach English to university students in Kayseri, Turkey. More recently, she received an Association for Contemplative Mind in Higher Education access grant for its Summer Session on Contemplative Practices in Education, a FORCE11 Scholarly Communications Institute Global Scholarship, and a Critical Language Scholarship for Turkish.
