Who has privileges at Biotech Commons Reserve?
All University of Pennsylvania students, faculty, staff, employees of the University of Pennsylvania Health System (HUP, Pennsylvania, Presbyterian, Phoenixville, and Affiliate Teaching Hospitals) and CHOP are eligible to use reserve materials and to borrow those items that circulate. Readers must present a current PennCard or Biotech Commons Borrowing Card when borrowing reserve materials. Visitors who have a Library Courtesy Card may use reserve materials only in while in the Biotech Commons.
Reserve materials are books, journal articles, videos and cd-roms located for convenient professional access or for a Penn course. Required readings for the Medical School, Nursing School, Biology and Biomedical Graduate Studies Departments and many basic medical and nursing texts are available at the Circulation/Reserve desk; phone 215-898-4114. The online catalog, Franklin, shows "Biotech Commons reserve" as the location when books are at the Circulation/Reserve desk in the Biotech Commons Library.
The Biotech Commons Circulation/Reserve desk is open all hours the Biotech Commons is open.
Finding Reserve Materials
Staff at the Circulation/Reserve desk will retrieve materials when you submit a call number.
To find call numbers and other information about location, please consult Franklin. You can search for reserve materials by course and by instructor.
Use within the library
The requested item is charged to your PennCard, Biotech Commons Borrower's Card or Library Courtesy Card for a 2-hour period. When you borrow, you may request a longer borrowing period, or ask to renew one time. If the item is heavily used, borrowing is limited to 1 hour with no renewals. If you do not have a borrower's card, ask for assistance.
Certain reserve books may be checked out for home use overnight after 11pm Sundays through Thursdays, after 9pm on Fridays, and after 5pm on Saturdays. Clasp envelope materials and video-cassettes do not circulate overnight.
Returning Biotech Commons Reserve Books
Return Reserve books only to the Biotech Commons Circulation/Reserve desk. Reserve items should not be returned to other campus Libraries. When returning items checked out overnight, if the Biotech Commons is closed, use the book return slot next to the outside entrance to the Biotech Commons.
Books are due on the next day the Library is open; by 9am Monday to Friday, by 11am Saturday and Sunday.
The Biotech Commons does not charge fines for in-house reserve use.
