This is a Multidisciplinary Tech Literacy Interest Group. Attendees are not required to use AI or study Machine Learning to drop by. There are no disciplinary bounds. The only prerequisites are curiosity and enthusiasm for learning. You are welcome to join us for particular sessions or for the entire event.

To kick off the event, Jaj and Eug will set the stage for the rest of the day. We will share the mission statement, our guiding principles, including digital land acknowledgments, and the day's packed schedule.
With extensive experience in data storytelling, natural language processing, computational social sciences, data visualization, network analysis, and knowledge mining (text/data/etc), Jaj Karajgikar engages with researchers across the disciplines interested in employing these techniques.
Eug Xu works as a Data Science & Society Research Assistant at Research Data and Digital Scholarship. They are a third-year undergraduate in History working towards a minor in the Digital Humanities.
Whether you are just curious about AI or have previously used various Generative Pre-Trained models, Andy will be sharing a comprehensive overview of what are LLMs, how they work, and the general state of the field.
Andy Janco works with project partners as the server-side programmer and technical lead on data-intensive digital humanities and digital scholarship projects. Andy has a PhD in Russian history from the University of Chicago and has experience using natural language processing and computer vision to analyze large historical document collections.
A general overview on fair use and training data, copyright protection of AI outputs, current lawsuits, the EU AI Act, and more.
Stephen Wolfson coordinates support for and advises on copyright, fair use, information policy, and related scholarly communications activities on Penn’s campus.
David will discuss a history of AI course that he designed and taught in Fall 2023. He will share how he organized around several forms variously construed as intelligent—calculating, game playing, and knowledge work—with a unifying emphasis on longstanding ambitions to manufacture minds and make mindless clerical workers.
David E. Dunning is a historian of science and technology whose research focuses on the material and social dimensions of abstract knowledge.
Speakers from the previous couple of hours will engage with each other's perspectives in a panel discussion moderated by Jaj Karajgikar.
Take a look at curated representations of automata, mechanical devices, computational objects, humanoid robotic sentience, cryptography, etc. in historical collections & rare book manuscripts from the Kislak Center for Special Collections.

John H. Pollack is Curator, Research Services, in the Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts at the University of Pennsylvania Libraries. He has worked in this department since 1995. His responsibilities include providing assistance to students and scholars, and teaching and organizing class sessions centered on the collections.
