Coffee with a Codex: Illustrated Manuscript in Sanskrit

An informal lunch or coffee time to meet virtually with Kislak curators and talk about one of the manuscripts from Penn's collections. Each week we'll feature a different manuscript and the expertise of one of our curators. Everyone is welcome to attend.

On December 4, South Asian Studies Librarian Jef Pierce brought out Ms. Coll. 390 Item 3020, a manuscript that contains the legend of Kālaka, important to the Śvetāmbara Jains and read during the first night of the Paryuṣaṇā. It is beautifully illustrated, and was written sometime between 1700 and 1850. We'll also look at a manuscript made from palm leaves, which informs the format of the later paper manuscript.
