This workshop is intended for Penn undergraduate students, graduate students, predocs, postdocs, faculty, and staff who have begun working in electronic spreadsheet software (e.g.: Excel) and want to summarize a dataset (find the mean, count features, etc.). The session is suited to learners interested in using Microsoft Excel as a digital tool for assignments, research, teaching, service, or the job market. This workshop provides techniques for grouping by labels and summarizing numeric (numbers) or countable content in Excel so that learners can develop reports or begin data analysis (systematically handling and interpreting data).

After this workshop, learners should be able to

  • Generate standard summary statistics
  • Split summaries by categories
  • Customize default summary tables

Expectations

  • Work-along with instructor: 45 min.
  • Solo/Group practice: 20 min.
  • Lecture: 10 min.

Requirements

  1. Prerequisite: This workshop expands on skills introduced during Get Started with Tables. Learners who attended this prior session or learned its skills elsewhere are welcome.
  2. Install Excel (for Windows) on your PC OR plan to use the Lippincott Library’s on-site computers.
