This workshop will help researchers become familiar with the data repository ecosystem in order for them to choose an appropriate data repository to share their dataset in. After this workshop, learners will be able to determine if a repository has desirable characteristics, outline the types of repositories available, and navigate the process of searching for a repository.

The main audience for this workshop is researchers who will be producing novel research data that needs to be shared in a data repository. This session is discipline agnostic and applies to all researchers.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Determine if a repository has desirable characteristics based on the current guidelines in order to comply with funder expectations and choose a quality repository
2. Outline the types of repositories available in order to better work within the repository ecosystem and make informed choices
3. Navigate the process of searching for an applicable repository in order to be able to find a repository that fits their research

Audience:

  • Researchers who currently handle research data. This includes faculty, staff, post-docs, and graduate students.
  • This will be of specific interest to researchers who will be required by journals, publishers, and funders to share their data.

Prerequisites:

  • Currently working or planning to work with research data. You do not have to be at the point of sharing your data to benefit from this workshop. In fact, it can save you time and effort by identifying where to share your data ahead of time!

About the Instructor:

Lauren Phegley is the Research Data Engineer in the Research Data & Digital Scholarship unit in Penn Libraries. She regularly consults with researchers on where to share their data, how to prepare data for sharing, and interpreting data sharing requirements.
