Hands-On Introduction to Designing Your Own Digital Negative

In this workshop, students build foundational Photoshop skills by creating digital negatives, developing an understanding of layers, tonal adjustments, resolution, and file preparation used in professional creative fields. By bridging digital and analog processes, students strengthen conceptual thinking, planning, and visual problem-solving skills essential for careers in photography, design, digital media, and creative direction.

Learning Goal:
Students will learn to evaluate and modify images so they print effectively on various materials, fostering critical thinking about how digital adjustments affect physical outcomes.

Learning Outcome:
By the end of the session, students will develop foundational Photoshop skills by creating digital negatives, strengthening their understanding of layers, tonal adjustment, resolution, and file preparation while applying these skills across digital and analog workflows.

Please note: This is Part 1 of a two-part workshop series. Cyanotype Creation—Part 2—will be held in the Education Commons on April 16. We encourage you to register for both sessions. In Part 2, you’ll use your digital negative to create cyanotype prints.
