Common Press Studio

Common Press at the University of Pennsylvania is dedicated to scholarly exploration and creative practice in the history, craft, and material culture of letterpress printing and bookmaking. Through hands-on workshops and tours, we educate about the cultural, historical, and technological significance of typography and bookbinding, making these practices accessible to Penn and the greater Philadelphia community.

About the Common Press

With printing presses dating from the 1850’s to the 1960’s and a collection of 300 different wood and metal types available for use, the facility provides an environment to learn about the history of the book and graphic design and use the constraints of the letterpress print shop to spark new ways of thinking. Common Press exists to support curriculum, research, and creativity across the university.
